From Hamburg to Sydney, Boris and Sandra’s Journey to a New Life
Visapath client story · Hamburg → Sydney
When Boris and Sandra left their apartment in Hamburg five years ago, they were not entirely sure what to expect. They had both traveled before, but this time it felt different. This was not just another trip abroad. It was a leap into something unknown, a decision that would eventually change the course of their lives.
Today, the couple lives in Sydney, surrounded by sunlight, beaches, and the energy of a city that never seems to stand still. Looking back, Boris says the journey was longer and more complex than they could have imagined, but also more rewarding than they ever hoped for.
A Leap of Faith
Boris had been working as an engineer in Germany when he began to think seriously about gaining international experience. “In my field, global exposure is becoming essential,” he explains. “I wanted to learn how things are done elsewhere, not just technically, but also culturally.”
Australia quickly stood out. The country’s reputation for high-quality education, combined with its relaxed lifestyle and openness to skilled migrants, made it an appealing choice. He started researching Master’s programs and found one that matched his professional interests perfectly.
Sandra supported him from the start. “We were both ready for a new chapter,” Boris says. “Sandra was working in marketing at the time and felt it was the right moment to take a break, to explore something new together.”
In 2019, they contacted Visapath, seeking advice on how to begin the process. From that first consultation, the team guided them step by step. “They explained every requirement clearly, from the English tests to the financial evidence. Without their guidance, I think we would have been lost in the bureaucracy,” Boris recalls.
A few months later, Boris received his Subclass 500 Student Visa, and Sandra was added as a secondary applicant. In November 2019, they boarded a plane to Sydney, carrying a few suitcases, a sense of adventure, and no concrete idea of what lay ahead.

Adapting to a New World
The early days were a mixture of excitement and challenge. “Everything was new,” Boris says. “The sun felt brighter, the days were longer, and people smiled at us in the supermarket. But it also meant adjusting to a completely different rhythm of life.”
Boris threw himself into his studies while Sandra began working part-time in a café. Later, she found a position in a small marketing agency in the city. “The fact that the student visa allowed her to work made a huge difference,” he says. “It helped us settle financially and socially.”
They quickly learned that life in Australia is both easy-going and demanding in its own way. “The pace is relaxed, but the expectations are high,” Boris explains. “You have to be proactive. Nobody waits for you to catch up.”
With time, the couple built a circle of friends, many of them other international students and young professionals. Weekends were spent exploring Sydney’s beaches and coastal walks, gradually turning unfamiliar places into familiar landmarks.
The Graduate Visa Chapter
When Boris completed his Master’s degree, it was clear that they wanted to stay longer. “We were just starting to feel settled,” he says. With Visapath’s continued support, they applied for the Graduate Visa (Subclass 485), which allows international graduates to live and work in Australia temporarily.
“Having Visapath involved again made the transition much smoother,” Boris notes. “They had all our previous documents and knew our background, so they prepared everything efficiently. It allowed us to focus on finding work and building our careers.”
Not long after, Boris secured a full-time position as a project engineer with a local construction company. “That was a major step for me,” he says. “It was my first Australian job, and it gave me valuable experience that later became crucial for our permanent residency application.”
Sandra also advanced in her career, taking on more responsibility at her marketing firm. “It felt like the puzzle pieces were starting to fit,” Boris says. “We were learning, earning, and truly living here.”
The Path to Permanent Residency
By 2023, Boris and Sandra were ready to turn their temporary stay into something lasting. The next goal was permanent residency through the General Skilled Migration program.
“Even after having gone through the student and graduate visa processes, the permanent visa was on another level of complexity,” Boris explains. “There are so many details — skills assessments, point calculations, state nomination options. It is not something you can just figure out through online forums.”
Visapath once again developed a clear strategy for them. Since Boris was already working in New South Wales (NSW) as an engineer, he was eligible to apply under the Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated Visa.
They submitted their Expression of Interest (EOI) and began the waiting game. “We expected it to take a year or longer,” Boris remembers. “But after just six months, we received the invitation from NSW.”
He still remembers the moment clearly. “We were spending the afternoon at the beach when the email came through. For a second I just stared at the screen. Then I handed the phone to Sandra and said, ‘You have to read this — I think it’s real.’ It felt surreal.”
With Visapath handling the formalities, the application process went smoothly. “They made sure every document was in order, checked our evidence, and submitted everything on time. It felt professional and

A few months later, they received the notification they had been waiting for. Their Permanent Residency was granted.
“It is hard to describe the feeling,” Boris says. “It was a mix of relief, pride, and joy. We had built something from the ground up, step by step, and it had finally paid off.”
A New Life in Sydney
Today, Boris and Sandra live in a quiet suburb north of Sydney, not far from the ocean. Boris continues to work as a project engineer, while Sandra has moved into digital marketing with an Australian firm.
“Our lives feel stable now,” Boris says. “We have good jobs, friends, and a community. We still miss our families in Germany, but we feel at home here.”
He often reflects on how the move has changed them both. “Australia taught us resilience. You need patience and a sense of humour to get through all the visa stages, but it also gives you confidence. We have learned to trust ourselves.
The couple now dreams of buying a small house and, eventually, applying for citizenship. “We are not rushing it,” Boris smiles. “We just want to keep building a life that feels true to us.”
Looking back, he believes the key was combining courage with professional guidance. “We took things one visa at a time. Having Visapath support us from the student visa all the way through to permanent residency gave us structure and peace of mind. They knew what was coming before we did.”
For Boris, the journey to Australia was never just about work or lifestyle. “It was about creating possibilities,” he says. “And now, every morning when I drive to work under a blue sky, I am reminded that the decision we made back in Hamburg was absolutely the right one.”
Interview with Boris
Looking Ahead : Boris and Sandra now plan to buy a house and are considering citizenship in the future. Their story is a clear example of step-by-step immigration planning.
How did you feel when you got the invitation from NSW?
“It was an incredible moment. We were sitting by the ocean, and I checked my email — there it was. It felt unreal. After years of studying and working towards this, we were finally being recognised by the state we had made our home.”
What advice would you give to others thinking about moving to Australia?
“Get professional advice early. Don’t rely only on forums or social media — every case is different. Having someone like Visapath to guide you makes the process smoother and more strategic. And take your time — the best results come from patience and preparation.”
What motivated you to move to Australia in the first place?
“I was curious about studying in an English-speaking environment and wanted to gain international experience in engineering. Australia appealed to me because of its education system and lifestyle. I also felt it would challenge me personally — and it did, in the best possible way.”
How did you find the process of getting your first visa?
“It looked overwhelming at first. The application forms, health checks, insurance, finances — it’s a lot to handle from overseas. Visapath guided us from start to finish, from the student visa to the graduate visa later on. Having experts who know the system saved us time, stress, and probably a few grey hairs.”
What was the biggest challenge during the skilled migration process?
“The uncertainty. You can do everything right — meet the criteria, submit your documents — and still wait months for an invitation. That’s why patience is key. Visapath kept us updated and made sure our application stayed competitive.”
How has your life changed since becoming a permanent resident?
“It’s the peace of mind. You stop worrying about visa expiry dates or work restrictions. We can plan our future freely now — travel, career, family. It’s a new level of stability.”
What does Australia mean to you now?
“It means opportunity, freedom, and balance. We’ve built a life here that combines everything we hoped for — professional growth, lifestyle, and a sense of belonging. It feels like home.”
